An interesting thing about Thaos family dynamic is that there seems to be a lack of a male authority figure in their household, the audience never sees Thaos dad or even grandfather. It is possible that this lack of a strong male figure in the household creates an immense amount of pressure on Thao to fill the void where his father shouldve been present. Perhaps because they lack a man they overcompensate and push Thao to be something that he is incapable of being at the moment. This is one of the main controversies with Panopticism, does it seek to reform the person in the prison or just to keep them in their forever controlling them with no intentions of letting them out? Does Thaos family seek to just emotionally harm him while keeping him with them forever or do they actually want to see him become their vision of a man? In addition to his family subjecting him to their notions of masculinity, Thao is also pushed by Walt. Thao and Walts relationship is extremely unique because initially Walt has no respect for Thao as a person and thinks he is no good, but eventually he ends up taking Thao under his wing and being a mentor or role model for him. Walt is a retired auto worker and war veteran, and despite his old age he acts as the watcher in the neighborhood. Panopticism is a large system with many sublevels so Walt himself is not the ultimate watcher, there are others watching him to ensure that the neighborhood is not complete chaos or even maybe to ensure that the neighborhood stays in the shape that it is. The government does not always care about the troubles that plague urban youth so this shows that Panopticism in our society is a structure built for the higher authority to watch the people and keep them in their place, causing trouble but not too much that it will affect them. Walt is simultaneously subjecting Thao to the notions of masculinity that he himself has been subjected to. Walt is very patriotic, which is a characteristic that was installed in many Americans in the 1950s, along with his strong work ethic, intolerance for laziness, and distrust of foreigners. The morals and behavioral norms that Walt displays are the result of the society. Walts patriotism was most likely installed into him in school where they make children say the pledge every morning or by the media with action toys and comic books. Walts pride in his participation in the Korean War also shows that American society has created this ideal that a true man is one that will serve his country and be willing to sacrifice himself that Walt feeds into, describing the events that happened to him during the war whenever he wants to prove his manliness. Walts strong work ethic also may have come from behaviors associated with manliness in society. The typical household in Walts era consisted of a wife who tended to all the housework and a husband who worked and provided the income for the family. All of these qualities that Walt has are reflected in his advice that he gives to Thao telling him that a real man has a car, woman, or job. There are many instances where Walt calls Thao gender slurs such as pussy for doing behavior that is not considered masculine, like gardening. This shows the similarity in Hmong and American culture in their notions of masculinity and the activities they view as feminine. This also shows that Panopticism can be applied in many different sects of life and many cultures. Taking on his role as a mentor, Walt helps Thao land a contracting job and a date with a girl he likes. In this way, Walt is going beyond the role of a watcher and actually physically forcing Thao to conform to the actions of masculinity. In addition to the actions, Walt attempts to teach him the behaviors associated with being a man in a scene where Thao and Walt go to the barbershop. In this scene Walt shows Thao how men talk to each other, exchanging insults with the barber and instructing Thao to do the same. Walt advises Thao to talk about his girlfriend, car, or job when conversing with another man. This shows us that human behavior is not biologically determined but learned through society and cultural expectations. People are not inherently masculine or feminine, they are taught by society that these are the gender roles and this is what you should conform to if you wish to be normal, this is what Panopticism aims to do to the subjects. In the speech Aint I A Woman? by Sojourner Truth, she exemplifies similar struggles with battling gender roles. In the speech, Truth speaks on the common behaviors and characteristics that are considered feminine saying, women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Truth expels these notions by saying Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And aint I a woman? These lines challenge societys ideals and are an exclamation saying that she does not have to conform to their gender roles. Truth repeats multiple times in the speech And aint I a woman? deconstructing the normal that society has created for women and refusing to be a prisoner to their mentality. Sojourner Truth was a slave so she was in literal imprisonment; Truth knew firsthand the reality of being a subject and despite this she rose to speak out to the people who have oppressed her. Thao faces similar challenges in standing up to the people who are oppressing him in the film, which are his cousin and the Hmong gang he is a part of. Thaos cousin, Spider, is the leader of a Hmong gang in their neighborhood which try to get Thao to join them. They attempt to initiate Thao into his gang by making him steal Walts Gran Torino. The gangs ideas of masculinity include doing illegal activities that put your life in danger. Spider is peculiarly hard bent on getting Thao to join him although he has shown that he is not cut out or qualified to do gang activities. There is a struggle for dominance within Spider that is clearly shown through his persistence with harassing Thao. Spider is seeking to validate his own masculinity by subjecting Thao to be under his rule. This relates to Panopticism in that Spider and his gang are one of the lower levels of guards and believe they have power and influence over people through violence when in fact they themselves are merely just subjects of the system. They believe that they are separate from the influence of the law and government but are truly prisoners in the system, doing what the government expects of them. Spider is in fact losing the notion of masculinity he has by actively participating in the Panopticism system, whether it is unconsciously. We have moral systems, culture, behavioral norms, and socially accepted ways of thinking that control us. No matter where we go or what we do, these cultural patterns follow us. We cannot escape them. Thao was subjected to societies ideas of masculinity and his struggle to conform to these ideals was shown throughout the film. We as people are not inherently anything, our subjectivity is created for us by society and panopticism works as a way to ensure that we are behaving as such.

The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, is a collection of tales and prologues of stories told by many characters whilst on a pilgrimage to the city of Canterbury. From religious figures such as nuns, monks and pardoners; to doctors, cooks and millers, this pilgrimage embarked on by many interesting people with stories that range from inspiring to gruesome. A few of the most predominant stories include those of the Prioress, the Summoner, the Wife of Bath, the Miller, and the Reeve. In these tales, Chaucer uses motifs such as karma, greed, religion, and social division in attempts to tie together stories that are seemingly all unrelated. It is also clear after reading each tale that common human interactions stated in these stories,†¦show more content†¦The answer itself, â€Å"A woman wants the self-same sovereignty†¦ her husband†¦he must not be above her.† (p.286) proves the possible reasoning behind why the Queen wished to override the King’s or ders. It is then said, â€Å"Maid, wife and widow cried, â€Å"He’s saved his life!†Ã¢â‚¬  (p.286); followed with the old woman’s exclamation to the Queen that the Knight received his answer from her. These series of events shows the complete oblivion to the severity of the rape case, that both men and women easily overlooked the Knight’s wrongdoings. Chaucer uses irony, in the sense that he is conveying the idea that women want power equal or over men, yet are in a way contradicting their demands by aiding a rapist. The tale seems to make more sense as we read on, where the old woman scolds the Knight for judging her based on her age and wealth, â€Å"You’re old, and so abominably plain, so poor to start with, so low-bred to follow;† (p.288) seeming that the woman’s status and suitability as a good wife is an accurate representation of her worth. This is a theme implemented by Chaucer, where a women’s worth is determined, by both men and women, by how well they can please a man; this then essentially becomes one of, if not the most important goal in life. Everything is made to center upon the initial act of â€Å"accepting† Christ. †4 As the reader continues to be blown away by his pragmatic grasp of the Christian experience in America, he wastes no time moving fluidly from point to point. At the end of chapter one, he points out that the man who follows hard after God will make Him his treasure and that man will have need of nothing else. Chapter two then describes that man and what his life looks like because of that point. He explains that each of us have a need for God and that our tendency is to replace God with more tangible things; the things of this world. But there is blessing in having nothing. â€Å"Everything is safe, which we commit to Him, and nothing is really safe which is not so committed. †5 The wonder about committing things to Him is not that we necessarily will be allowed to keep them, it is that we will no longer miss them if we are not so permitted. It is a freeing act that will bless us eternally if we can only learn to let loose our grasp on this world. Logically proceeding, Tozer indicates that we are to remove the veil of this life, world, flesh, etc. so that we can more clearly see Christ and the reality that lives, currently and eternally, beyond and throughout ours. It being reasonable to accept that because we were made in the image of God, we were made to glorify Him, we should do so with abundant joy and the recognition of our great privilege. It is then of the highest importance that we tear through the veil of our flesh, aptly ripping blood and sinew and bone (metaphorically of course, but he speaks of the likened pain that this act will cause) so we can adequately apprehend God. We will then see evidence of His presence in us, around us, besides us: we can never escape God. â€Å"If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. †6 He is truly everywhere at o nce, omnipotent and omnipresent, all knowing and holy. If universe can be broken down to mean single (uni-) spoken sentence (verse), then we know that God’s word lives and is living. In fact, â€Å"The application of the term to the eternal Son leads us to believe that self-expression is inherent in the Godhead, that God is forever seeking to speak Himself out to His creation. †7 God’s voice permeated creation from the very moment He spoke it into existence, and it never left. It still speaks and is speaking through everything. He not only spoke through the Bible, but the Bible is â€Å"the inevitable outcome of God’s continuous speech†! Where is our faith? The next point is surmised from the acceptance of God’s work in our lives from the very beginning, speaking to us, living in us. That still small Voice urging us to hear while giving us the ability to refuse Him. â€Å"We learn that faith is not a once-done act, but a continuous gaze of the heart at the Triune God. †9 When God made the heavens and the earth, He said it was good. When man sinned, that relationship was torn and we fell out of good graces with God. Faith is the avenue by which God gives us to willingly return to Him so that His fellowship with us can return. Thus, we need to continue in faith to restore our relationship with God. If all else were for not, restoring our relationship with the God of the universe should be enough, but His blessings go deeper still and a relationship with Him is so much more. God offers us rest in this life. Though the natural corruption of man incites attitudes that are directly controversial to the Jesus’s teaching of the Beatitudes10, if we accept His teachings and nurture in our lives the meekness He speaks of in the gospel of Matthew, we will begin to experience God’s kingdom manifested in this life. No longer should we see through the corrupt lenses of this world into the kingdom of God, but we are to see through the pure and perfect eyes of God into the kingdom of man. Keeping a heavenly-sighted mind as described earlier in the book, we can now unify God’s precepts with temporal responsibilities to manifest God’s peace and rest in our life on earth. Finally, Tozer concludes, â€Å"Let a man sanctify the Lord God in his heart and he can thereafter do no common act. All he does is good and acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For such a man, living itself will be a priestly ministration. Through the same masterful literary prowess that he taught himself through years of devout study, Tozer hammers into the hearts of his readers the keynote of each chapter. He elegantly navigates natural avenues of thought while hitting key points in sequence, tracing logic of the Bible to arrive at the ultimate destination of the heart of a true believer of Christ. Along the way, he checks the hearts of those who assume themselves to fall into that category, strengthening their faith and their walk with Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to flow through our lives and cleanse our souls. This book is truly a refreshing spring in a vast desert of traditional Biblical orthodoxy. Any negative evaluations of the text that I have personally seen would surely not have been warranted in the day it was written. Although the vocabulary used was slightly higher than the modern norm of Christian non-fiction, Tozer presented his insights in a surprisingly pragmatic way. Testing his words against the backdrop of a lifetime spent in the church and a decade spent reading the Scriptures on my own leaves me without argument to his discernment of the text. Even the solitary questionable opinion that he mentioned in the book was so stated. Overall, to ask for three weaknesses would be to render undue criticism to an otherwise impeccable rendition of the human spirit’s need for God. PERSONAL APPLICATION As I write this paper I find it difficult to put into words just how priceless the lesson that Tozer provides through this book is. However difficult it was to write a term paper in the midst of an already hectic life, I know that I will keep this book and read it again and again. There are seemingly endless applications that I can derive from this book beginning, no less, in the very foreword that describes Tozer himself. It is no coincidence that his words were as powerful as they are and the lessons so meaningful. As stated before, Tozer wrote this book literally on his knees. This is a priceless picture of just what it takes to be a great disciple of Jesus. I want to be such a disciple. To be so enthralled by God that the rest of the world fades away is as close as we can get to Heaven on this earth. I find myself at the very beginning of the path that Tozer lays out for us. He writes in the first chapter, â€Å"We must simplify our approach to Him. We must strip down to essentials (and they will be found to be blessedly few). We must put away all effort to impress, and come with the guileless candor of childhood. †12 Humility is the key to a life in the servant hood of God. Neither can He use us or shape us if we first do not come before Him in surrender of our will and our way. God my will is Yours, my path is Yours to direct. Should I stumble I pray that You would pick me up and draw me ever close to You. How can I live in this world without You? God indwell in me and make me Yours. I surrender all of me to You. Make me more like You and less like me. Thank You for the faith that You have given me. Yours is the kingdom forever and ever. Amen.
